A nerve pain which occurs as a result of the irritation of the sciatic nerve is called sciatica. Being the largest nerve in the body, sciatic nerve, starts in the spinal cord in the low back and moves through the area of the buttock to send nerve endings down the lower limb. Upon knowing the causes for sciatica and the severity of the pain, the treatment is doled out to the patients. The sciatica pain is generally felt from the low back.
The symptoms shown by sciatica patients are pain in the lower back, buttock, and down the back of either leg, numbness in leg, pain aggravates in sedentary lifestyle, hip pain, weakness, trouble in moving the leg or foot, etc. Walking also becomes difficult for patients who suffer from severe form of sciatica. Sciatica usually affects one side of the lower body; the pain hinges entirely on position as to where the sciatic nerve is affected. The pain travels from lower back to the back of the thighs and legs and down to foot and toes. Sciatica is also known as sciatic nerve pain.
There are several causes for sciatica like inflammation of the sciatic nerve, disc herniation pressing on the nerve, internal bleeding, lumbar spine infection, pinched nerve from a disc, irritation of nerve from adjacent bone, etc. There are factors which are regarded as the risk factors for sciatica like sedentary lifestyle, prolonged sitting, diabetes, obesity, degenerative arthritis of lumbar spine, slipped disc, lumbar disc disease, injury to the lumbar spine, etc.
The doctor should be immediately consulted by the ones who have weakness in the affected leg and have loss of bowel function. The doctor recommends exercises and specific activities in order to protect the back and also prevent the chance of recurring of sciatica. Proper sitting posture should be maintained. Also, people should refrain from lifting heavy objects, and lifting and twisting at the same time. Medications, steroid injections, physical therapy are the treatments suggested by the doctor. In severe cases, surgery is done to treat sciatica. Persistent sciatica is treated by surgical procedures like lumbar laminectomy and discectomy.
